Bellefontaine’s boys basketball team avenged an earlier season loss to Tecumseh on Friday and picked up its first Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail win with a 77-71 victory.
The Chiefs, who lost to the Arrows 76-55 in early January, are now 2-18 overall and finish 1-9 in the CBC Kenton Trail. The Arrows slide to 5-17, 1-9.
“I was so proud of the guys tonight,” said BHS head coach Jason Calton. “It was a total team win tonight.
“I’m also so proud of a kid like Dalton Carter that has served the team all year by filming and then gets a chance to play. And he plays great defense for us.”
Bellefontaine’s boys fed off the energy from the Hall of Fame recognition Friday and took control early with a 13-9 lead to end the opening quarter. That continued into the second quarter with a 26-9 run, putting the Chiefs ahead 39-18 at halftime.
Tecumseh battled its way back into the game during the third quarter with a 24-20 run, but still trailed BHS 59-42. The Arrows made up ground in the fourth quarter with a 29-18 run, which still wasn’t enough to catch the Chiefs.
“These guys came out on fire tonight and jumped on the Arrows from the tip,” said Calton. “We’ve been waiting on a night like this for these guys to enjoy. We are going to enjoy this one and get ready for the quick turnaround vs Xenia.”
Declan Ashcraft carried the BHS offense with 20 points, Maverick Calton had 13 points, Jarrid Baughman tallied nine points, while Simon Stolly and Brett Belser each had eight points.
In junior varsity action, Tecumseh defeated Bellefontaine 63-53. Jason Willoughby and Dylan Breckler each had 12 points with Jayden Campbell scoring 11 points.
Bellefontaine hosts Xenia tonight in a nonleague contest.
