Bellefontaine’s wrestling team placed 11 wrestlers and had three district qualifiers after competing at the Division I sectional tournament Friday and Saturday at Centerville High School.
Advancing to the districts for the Chieftains were Gaige Reeves (113), Phil Francis (160) and C.J. Cook (170).
The top four in each weight class moved on to the Division I district tournament this weekend at Kettering-Fairmont’s Trent Arena.
Butler ran away with the sectional title after scoring 212.5 points. Springboro was second with 166.5 points and Centerville was close behind with 162 points. Fairmont edged Bellefontaine for fourth 127.5-127.
“We started off really strong on Friday and wrestled very well for most of the tournament,” said BHS head coach Aaron LaBatt. “We had one bad round, when it mattered the most. Our kids wrestled tough, though, and looked much better than a week ago at league.
“We placed a lot of kids, but we were only able to advance three out of 11 in the qualifying round. Some of those we were outmatched, some we should have lost, but a few we should have won. We battled and I felt we had a solid showing for Division I.”
