MARYSVILLE — Bellefontaine’s boys basketball team was tired of playing from behind.
“We had got into a little bit of a habit of starting slow and then having to try to play catch up,” said Bellefontaine senior guard Nicklaus Lyons after his team’s 68-54 win over host Marysville on Tuesday. “We felt like if we won the first quarter, we would win the game.”
The Chiefs played the Monarchs even (13-13) in the first quarter and even in the second quarter (12-12) to go into the halftime locker room tied at 25-25.
Bellefontaine, which fell into first-half holes before coming up short in second-half comeback attempts against Vandalia-Butler and Jonathan Alder the last two games, then dominated the second half to come away with an impressive win over a Division I opponent.
“I take it upon myself to have these guys ready to play, and I don’t think I have done a good enough job of having them locked in at the start of games,” said Bellefontaine head coach Jason Calton. “I don’t know if we did anything different tonight from a preparation standpoint. The guys just came out ready to battle and they went all out for four quarters.”
