The top two finishers in Friday’s district meet earned automatic state berths. Those finishing outside of the top two had to wait until Sunday until the rest of the times from around the state were gathered and released.
When the final list of the state qualifiers was released Sunday, the Chiefs found out they had also qualified in the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.
The 200 medley relay is seeded 18th and the 200 freestyle relay is seeded 24th. Both relays consist of Amy Fulmer, Sarah Starkey, Abby Kite and Shelby Starkey. Sarah Fulmer is the alternate.
The Division II state meet is Thursday and Friday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
“Trust the process is what we tell our swimmers over and over throughout the season,” said Bellefontaine head coach Sharon Lewis. “Our athletes put in the work and believe in the system but even so, there can be disappointing moments at the end. This was last year’s story for our relays.
“We worked hard, we dropped time, but it just wasn’t quite enough as we finished with the 27th fastest time in the state missing advancing by a mere three places in each of our two top relays. So we came back with fire and just as much, or even more, trust in the process and it paid off.”
