The fourth Sunday of September has been a quiet agony for military mothers who have lost a child, a Zanesfield woman said Sunday.
This year, however, Sandy Lockwood, mother of Marine Gunnery Sgt. David Spicer who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009, said she “had a reason to get out of bed, get dressed up and even put on some makeup.”
Although Gold Star Mother’s Day has been observed since 1928, this was the first year the occasion was marked with a local ceremony.
“Every year I put a rant on Facebook just before Gold Star Mother’s Day, but if it weren’t for Facebook I probably wouldn’t hear anything about it,” the mother said. “On the second Sunday in May, you get calls and flowers and cards, but on the fourth Sunday in September, no one calls or comes over. Most years I don’t even want to get out of bed.”
