Benjamin Logan Middle School sixth-graders in Gretchen Powell’s English language arts classes’ favorite color has been green for over a month, starting on St. Patrick’s Day when they named leprechauns, zen-doodled shamrocks and read about the day. After that celebration, the students began prepping for Earth Day on April 22.
Students selected Earth Day projects and compiled lists of recycling items that they would need. A list was given to Angel Payne from Logan County Solid Waste District, who helped find specific items that students weren’t able to find at home.
Along with making a project of their choice, the students reused water bottles and transformed them into pots. After painting and mod podging, the students planted baby plantlets known as “Mother of Thousands” or baby spider plants called “pups” from Mrs. Powell’s mother plants.
Finally, students chose a teacher, administrator, custodian, or food service person at Benjamin Logan to give their plant to on Earth Day. They made a plant sign with the scientific name and common name of their plant and designed a card explaining how to care for the plant.
The students took an Earth Day walk around campus visiting the elementary, middle school, high school and Central Office to deliver their gifts.
