In the face of adversity, one young woman’s remarkable courage and leadership shone brightly during a recent tornado that swept through Russells Point and Lakeview.
Julie McManus, a Benjamin Logan bus driver and owner of Subway of Indian Lake, is proud to extend heartfelt recognition to Hannah Phillips, a Benjamin Logan senior, for her exceptional maturity and leadership skills displayed on the evening of March 14.
When the tornado struck, Hannah found herself alongside three other high school students on shift at Subway of Indian Lake. Despite the suddenness of the situation, McManus’ quick guidance prompted Hannah to usher everyone into the bathrooms for safety.
Days later, upon reviewing security footage, it became evident that Hannah’s actions were nothing short of heroic, McManus relayed to Benjamin Logan school officials.
With calmness and confidence, Hannah secured the building and ensured the safety of both customers and crew members.
Notably, when three separate groups sought shelter, Hannah welcomed them into the establishment, “demonstrating exceptional compassion and bravery,” the restaurant owner said.
Reflecting on the events of that evening, Hannah expressed disbelief at her role, stating, “I had no idea I would be that person.”
However, Julie McManus had unwavering faith in Hannah’s character, affirming, “I knew you would be that person!”
“I distributed water, secured doors, and monitored forecasts,” Hannah remarked. “Through our lobby’s huge windows, we watched the wind rage, hail pummel, and the tornado ravage Orchard Island.
“Thankful for our safety, I rode the adrenaline wave that night.
“But come Friday morning, reality hit hard. The echoes of children crying, the mother’s hysteria, and coworkers’ tearful calls to loved ones still haunt me. My heart breaks for those physically and mentally scarred by this tragedy.”
Remarkably, despite the tornado’s fury, Subway of Indian Lake emerged unscathed. McManus extended her gratitude not only to Hannah but also to the other three high schoolers involved — one from Jackson Center, one from Indian Lake, and one from Ohio High-Point/Indian Lake.
“In times of crisis, true leaders emerge, and Hannah Phillips exemplified this with grace and courage. Her actions remind us all of the strength and resilience within our community,” Benjamin Logan officials said this week.
