Bellefontaine is moving ahead with projects to demolish the former post office, improve the police and fire department radio communications, pave all or part of 50 streets and replace old water lines on south Main Street.
City Council members also approved Tuesday first readings of two measures that would place issues on the November ballot to opt out of gas and electric utilities to enable Affordable Gas & Electric to market city customers for better rates.
AGE will handle advertising and education of the proposed ballot issue if council members approved the ordinances.
The ballot initiatives must be filed in early August.
City Code Enforcement Officer Wes Dodds updated the Finance Committee about plans to raze the former post office at 201 W. Chillicothe Ave.
Money from Logan County’s Community Development Block Grant funds will be available Jan. 1, but it will take several months to assess the project for hazardous materials and develop the demolition plan.
Costs are estimated at $115,000 with the city paying no more than $35,800.
The county took possession of the property over unpaid property taxes and has unsuccessfully tried to sell it.
Once demolished, county leaders have said they will give ownership of the property to the city, Service-Safety Director James Holycross said.
