Local bakers shared their handiwork Tuesday at the open class home products judging.
Susan Weikart of West Liberty took grand champion honors with her sweet and salty strawberry bars. She used a recipe found in a cook book written by Joanna Fluke, the author of murder mystery novels and the owner of a cookie shop.

Karen Wisse, a now retired citizen of Bellefontaine and frequent successful participant in the competition, was awarded reserve champion for her Christmas cookies. She remembers using this recipe with her family and has entered them into the Logan County Fair every year since she was in high school.

The Holtkamp family dominated the cake category. Cousins Ashley and Jena Holtkamp, both from Belle Center, won grand and reserve champion honors, respectively. Ashley’s chocolate layer cake topped the rest, while Jena’s white layer cake came in a close second.

Anita Green from Bellefontaine earned a grand champion ribbon in the candy category for her toffees topped with toasted almonds. She thinks what set her apart from the rest was her use of local chocolate from Marie’s Candies in West Liberty.

Reserve champion was awarded to the plate of buckeyes made by Stephanie Staley of Bellefontaine. Her entry into the fair was encouraged by her husband, who tried her buckeyes and proclaimed, “That’s a ribbon!”
