Citing too many hurdles to overcome, the Acme Baseball Congress canceled its summer season Tuesday.
Several area schools have participated in the Acme league over the years. Typically, the season would start in early June and conclude with sectional, district and state tournaments in July.
“We had a Zoom meeting last night with all of the directors,” said Bellefontaine head baseball coach Mark Brunswick, who serves as the local Acme director. “As time has went on, we realized there are numerous factors still up in the air and trying to cram everything into July would not be possible. The main issues are the liability factor, the fact that school facilities remain closed until July 1st and the possibility of the state no-contact period being extended.”
Brunswick, however, has not given up hope of playing some sort of summer baseball. While the Acme umbrella won’t be available to play under, Brunswick and several area high school coaches have discussed the idea of putting together a Logan County-area league for games in July.
“If the restrictions are lifted, we are hoping to have around six local teams, with everybody playing each other twice and then having a little tournament at the end,” said Brunswick. “I want to make sure we work in coordination with the other sports teams, so we are all on the same page.
“If the restrictions are lifted in July, we won’t be able to do it. But we remain hopeful of getting something in. These kids have been through a lot and it would be great to give them an opportunity to get some some games in.”’
