A room full of Bellefontaine City Schools students and their parents had the chance Monday evening to witness a proud moment for a local veteran, who received an honorary Bellefontaine High School diploma during the regular board of education meeting.
Superintendent Brad Hall presented the diploma to West Liberty resident and former BHS student David Eugene Wilcox, who left high school in September 1965 to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
“Mr. Wilcox, with so many future graduates of Bellefontaine High School with us this evening, I welcome you to your graduation day,” Mr. Hall said during the presentation, which concluded with a standing ovation from the youths and adults.
President Joan Haushalter had invited the pupils, who were recognized earlier in the meeting for various accomplishments, to stay for the special occasion.
“While we typically offer our students with the chance to leave the meeting a little early, tonight we have a unique opportunity,” she said.
“I think sometimes we confuse heroism with fame. Tonight, we have the chance to honor a true American hero.”
