Mac-A-Cheek Learning Center students, from the left, Nick Elfrink of London, Steven Baer and Jonny Branstiter of Urbana and Mark Henry of Kenton check out a new crisis text line banner that was delivered to their school Wednesday by the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Logan and Champaign Counties. Coalition Chair Karey Thompson said May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the coalition has received a $1,000 mini grant from the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities that enables the organization to offer personalized crisis text line banners to each of the middle schools in Logan and Champaign counties. To utilize the text line, area residents can text the phrase “4HOPE” to 741 741 for free and confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thompson noted that area residents are encouraged to utilize the service or the local crisis phone number, (800) 224-0422, even before they personally reach a “crisis” level. “While it is called a ‘crisis’ text line or hotline, we’re emphasizing that a situation doesn’t have to reach a crisis level to utilize the helpline,” she said. “We want to encourage people to reach out even before they get to that point that they’re severely depressed or suicidal. We’re here to help if they’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or are experiencing anxiety.” (EXAMINER PHOTO | MANDY LOEHR)
