A city man died from injuries after a car/pedestrian crash around 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Jay Avenue.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department are investigating why Gary Wilcoxon, 65, of 1000 Garfield Ave., Lot 53, was lying in the roadway when he was hit by a passing car.
The driver stopped and called 911 to report the incident. He was very cooperative, Police Chief Brandon Standley reports.
There is no suspicion of alcohol impairment regarding the driver, the chief said.
Mr. Wilcoxon sustained life-threatening injuries and was eventually transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where he succumbed to the injuries Sunday morning.
Conditions were clear and cool at the time of the crash.
Investigators are attempting to retrace the victim’s steps to determine where he was coming from and how he ended up in the roadway.
An autopsy will be completed by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation is ongoing and is expected to take several days, Chief Standley said.
