April N. McCurdy, 41, of 11400 Powhatan Path, Lakeview, was charged with illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse into a detention facility and tampering with evidence Friday evening following a traffic stop.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office on patrol about 6:50 p.m. in the area of State Route 117 and County Road 38 observed a speed violation with her vehicle and initiated the stop.
Deputies said she appeared nervous during the stop and she provided consent to search the vehicle. K9 Thor was deployed and the dog indicated on the vehicle.
A probable cause search was conducted of the vehicle and no illegal items were found, deputies said. However, McCurdy had been seated in a patrol car during the search, and deputies said an unknown white substance was found where she had been sitting when she exited the patrol car.
As a result of her probation restrictions, her probation officer requested that McCurdy have a urine test. She was transported to the Logan County Jail for the test.
Upon arrival at the jail, she was asked by corrections staff if she had any illegal items on her person. She said she did not, but a body scanner screening at the jail indicated that she had concealed a methamphetamine pipe in a body cavity. The defendant was lodged in the jail.
• Tonya M. McCarty, 46, of 246 N. Orchard Island, lot 58, Russells Point, was charged with illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse into a detention facility and tampering with evidence early Sunday morning.
Deputies met Union County deputies at the Logan and Union county line about 2:10 a.m. to transport McCarty to the Logan County Jail. She reportedly had been involved in a traffic stop in Union County and was found to have a felony warrant out of Logan County for contempt of court on a felonious assault charge.
McCarty was asked by deputies and later by corrections staff at the jail if she had any illegal items on her person and she said she did not. However, the jail’s body scanner showed that she had concealed a meth pipe inside a body cavity. Suspected drug residue was found on the meth pipe.
Duo charged with OVI
Timothy M. Steinhelfer, 34, of 617 W. Patterson Ave., Bellefontaine, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, Friday and his passenger, Kristin A. Wilson, 35, of Henderson, Nevada, was charged with OVI later that evening when she attempted to pick him up from the jail.
Deputies reported observing traffic violations with his vehicle, including failure to use a turn signal and also following another vehicle too closely about 9:20 p.m., and attempted to initiate a traffic stop in the area of east Spring and south Madriver Street in the city. However, Steinhelfer reportedly continued onto an alleyway and turned into his driveway, where he came to a stop.
The driver initially would not answer deputies’ questions, and deputies observed that he displayed signs of intoxication. Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department also responded, as Steinhelfer continued refusing to answer questions.
Deputies also located a baggie of suspected marijuana within plain view inside the vehicle.
Steinhelfer refused to submit to field sobriety tests and was transported to the jail, where he also refused to take a chemical breath test.
Deputies spoke with the passenger, Wilson, at the scene, and she told deputies that she had been drinking that night as well and agreed to stay home. However, deputies said about 10:45 p.m., she showed up to the jail window, asking to pick up Steinhelfer.
While speaking with her in the jail lobby, deputies detected an odor of alcohol on her person. She refused to participate in field sobriety tests and a chemical breath test. She apologized to deputies, stating she should not have been driving.
Steinhelfer also had a prior OVI conviction in 2015, deputies said. He was issued a summons for possession of marijuana and was cited for following too closely.
Steinhelfer and Wilson were released to a sober family member.
