SIDNEY — Deputies of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a crash involving an Amish buggy and a vehicle Thursday morning that reportedly sent the buggy occupants to Wilson Memorial Hospital here.
Buggy operator Jacob Schwartz, 49, of Maplewood, and his wife, Rosa, and four children ranging in ages from 1 to 9 reportedly were transported to the hospital following the crash about 10:15 a.m. in the 22000 block of State Route 47 in Shelby County near the Logan County line, deputies report.
One child reportedly was later transferred to Dayton Children’s Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Deputies report Nicholas Emerich, 31, of Bellefontaine, was operating an eastbound vehicle and failed to see the buggy. His vehicle struck the rear of the buggy, and the impact forced the buggy off the right side of the road, ejecting the passengers.
The Sidney Daily News reports that two nurses, Susie Wilkins of Lewistown and Jenny Bell of Huntsville, were driving to Sidney when they saw the crash and were among the first to provide treatment for the injured parties, along with an EMT who arrived in his personal vehicle.
At this time, neither speed, alcohol nor texting appear to be factors in the crash. Deputies are continuing their investigation.
Deputies also were assisted by EMS personnel from Port Jefferson, Anna, Sidney and Indian Lake and Port Jefferson and Maplewood fire departments. A medical helicopter was requested at the scene, but was unable to fly because of weather conditions.
