Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report a Dayton woman was killed in a Friday afternoon crash at state routes 235 and 47 after her sport utility vehicle was struck by a semi tractor-trailer.
Mary Elizabeth Pasquale-Berenics, 54, was flown by CareFlight helicopter to the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, where she was pronounced dead.
Deputies report she was operating a northbound 2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio on State Route 235 at 12:29 p.m.
A westbound semi on S.R. 47 operated by Jose Ramon Pujol Cabrera, 51, of Cape Coral, Fla,, reportedly failed to stop at the posted stop sign at the intersection. His semi struck Pasquale-Berenics’ SUV.
The semi traveled off the roadway, striking the ditch and a utility pole and then overturning into the parking lot at the northwest corner of the intersection, deputies said.
Cabrera and his passenger, Lianet V. Trujillo, 39, of Cape Coral, Fla., each were transported by Indian Lake EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries.
Deputies said investigation continues and charges are pending against Cabrera.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by emergency personnel from Bellefontaine, Riverside, Indian Lake, Robinaugh and Miami Township EMS and Washington Township Police Department officers. The Multi-County Crash Investigation Team is handling the crash investigation.
Logan County Hazardous Materials Team responded to the scene for diesel clean-up, along with Ohio Department of Transportation.
The intersection remained closed for much of the day Friday as first responders worked on the scene.
Damage was heavy to the SUV and the semi, which were towed from the scene.
This is the fifth fatal crash in Logan County this year.
