A group of 23 youths danced about and received an honor for their patriotism as the 10th annual Summer Autism Academy came to a close Thursday afternoon in the Bellefontaine High School’s distance learning center.
The seven-week program is intended to help students with learning challenges stay focused in the summer months, program co-coordinators Christi Dodds and Tracy Gregg said.
“One of our goals is to keep the kiddos in a routine throughout the summer,” Dodds said, explaining that that youths spent three mornings a week divided into three classes of seven or eight students.
The 13 teachers are able to provide individual and small group instruction as needed to the students who range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade, she said of the educational component of the academy.
“But we also get to have a lot of fun,” Dodds added, noting that each afternoon the classes came together for a combined field trip that included afternoon activities at city parks, visits to local restaurants, swimming at the Hilliker YMCA, skating at the Indian Lake Rollarena, a movie at the theater and fun and games at the Logan County Fair.
