Douglas J. Kay, 57, of Columbus, was transported by MedFlight helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus Wednesday after sustaining an accidental gunshot wound to his leg during a trip to the Logan County Fish and Game, 2056, U.S. Route 68, Bellefontaine, deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report.
Bellefontaine Fire and EMS and deputies were dispatched about 2:15 p.m. to the shooting range on a report of a male that sustained a gunshot wound to his back.
Jerry Beach, Director of the Logan County Fish and Game, clarified later that the man, who is from out-of-town, was shot in the leg.
Deputies reported that Kay also sustained a shrapnel wound to his back. He reportedly was standing in the facility’s parking lot when he heard a shot go off and then felt pain in his leg and back.
“According to his friends that brought him,” the injured male is in stable condition and was communicating, Beach said.
The incident occurred when, “an out-of-town member was placing a gun back into the gun case, and it discharged, hitting another out-of-town member in the upper right leg,” according to Beach’s account.
“This incident was an accident — preventable — but still an accident,” he said.
