Alexis Meeker has been selected as Poppy Queen for 2022 for the Willard Stout American Legion Auxiliary Post 266 in Belle Center,where Alexis is a junior member.
The American Legion Auxiliary and its volunteers will distribute the red crepe paper poppies for donation on Saturday, May 28, in Belle Center.
The donations will assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The Poppy Program is a source of income for the veterans who make them in the Ohio Veterans Home.
Alexis is a daughter of Jordan Meeker and Nicole Lange. She is a granddaughter of Randy and Dee Slayback, Matt Meeker, great- granddaughter of Richard and Anita Legge and Richard and Jane Meeker.
Alexis comes from a long line of servicemen, her grandfather Mr. Slayback served in the Army Reserve and in Desert Storm, her great- grandfather’s Mr. Legge served in the U.S. Marines and is a Vietnam veteran. Mr. Meeker was a Corporal in the U.S. Army.
The poppy queen will be going into the second-grade at Indian Lake Elementary, where she is active in basketball. Alexis also loves to play softball, draw and paint pictures.
The poppy is a world-wide recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honor the men and women who have served and died for their country in all wars, including the Global War on Terror.
“It reminds us of the sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans and service members,” representatives said.
