Riverside senior John Zumberger poured in 35 points and set two three-point records Saturday as he led the Pirates to an 85-67 win over host Bradford in non-league play.
“Our guys came out tonight fired up and ready to play,” said RHS head coach Seth Bodenmiller. “Defensively, we were very active and created some turnovers that led to some easy baskets. Offensively, I thought that we were the aggressors for most of the night and got a lot of great looks.”
Zumberger set the mark for all-time career three-pointers at Riverside with 121. The record was previously held by Landon Kelsey with 114. Zumberger had nine three-pointers in Saturday’s game, which also set the record for most three-pointers in a single game. The previous record was seven held by multiple players.
“Obviously, tonight was a special night for John,” said Bodenmiller. “We had hoped that he would be able to get the career record out of the way tonight so we wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore. As it turned out, he had a lot more on his mind and wasn’t planning on stopping.
“It’s great when achievements like this happen to good people. John has without a doubt been one of our hardest workers for the last four years and has put a lot of time into his game. I couldn’t be more proud of him, but more importantly, I’m very proud of his teammates for working to create open looks for him and then find him on the floor. It was a great way to start the new year.”
Riverside came out firing in the opening quarter with a 19-9 run. The Pirates used a 21-9 effort in the second quarter to build a 40-28 halftime advantage.
The third quarter saw Riverside outscore Bradford 23-19, which made the score a 63-47 cushion. The Pirates capped the win with a 22-20 run in the fourth quarter.
In addition to Zumberger, the offense saw Kaden Burk score 11 points, Walker Whitaker score nine points with six rebounds and Jayden Burchett add eight points with six rebounds.
In junior varsity action, Riverside raced past Bradford 72-46. Dominik Stotler led the Pirates with 26 points, Cody Craig had 15 points, Tyler Knight scored 12 points and Warren Shockey had 10 points.
Riverside hosts Botkins on Tuesday in another non-league game.
