Practical tips, support network offered
Chronic pain — pain that lasts longer than three to six months — can take both a physical and emotional toll on a person’s life, affecting daily activities, the way the individual relates to loved ones, and sometimes lead to feelings of depression and anxiety.

To improve confidence in managing symptoms, and to meet others who have encountered similar situations and grow a strong support network, a Healthy U Chronic Pain Self-Management Workshop is being offered starting this week, led by presenters from the Area Agency on Aging, PSA-2.
The six-week course starts Thursday from 1 to 3:30 p.m., and continues Thursdays through April 14 at the St. Mary of the Woods Church, 464 Madison Ave., Russells Point.
Co-presenter Dianne Nelson said anyone who is interested in the class should feel free to stop by this week. For those who would like to pre-register, they can call Jean Klinker at 843-3127 or 441-1501.
“I’ve had many people who have taken the Healthy U classes describe them as ‘life-changing,’” said Ms. Nelson, who has been a presenter with the program for several years. “I’d encourage anyone who was interested to check it out.
“Sometimes when people are struggling with aches and pains, they suffer through it at home and feel isolated. By coming out to the class, they find out that they’re not alone on the boat anymore. We develop a real camaraderie among the group members.”
The class is free for individuals age 60 and older through Older Americans Act funding. The fee for individuals under 60 is $20 to cover the cost of the companion textbook, Living aHealthy Life with Chronic Pain, and a “Moving Easy” CD.
