Jenna Woods helped carry Riverside’s softball team past visiting Dayton Christian on Thursday by throwing a perfect game in a 14-0 win in five innings to open Division IV tournament action.
A senior, Woods dominated in the pitching circle. She struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced.
“Jenna did an excellent job hitting her spots tonight,” said Riverside head coach Andy Phelps. “It was fun to watch her put it all together to get the perfect game. It’s the first of her career and is a very hard accomplishment. I’m very proud of her and her team for the support tonight,”
The eighth-seeded Pirates (12-13) advance to play third-seeded Russia on Tuesday at Arcanum High School. Russia edged Triad 5-4 on Thursday.
The 19th-seeded Warriors drop to 4-11.
Riverside got rolling early Thursday and drove in four runs in the first inning. The Pirates exploded for 10 runs in the second inning for a 14-0 advantage. That was more than enough offense for Woods, who overpowered the Warrior hitters.
For Riverside, Malina Kreglow went 3-3 with a home run, a double and an RBI, Malaina Jenkins went 2-2 with two doubles and two RBI, Woods had a home run with three RBI, Amerra Huston went 2-2 with a double, Jade Copas went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Olivia Perk went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Kylee Angle went 2-3 with an RBI and Alaina Snow added an RBI.
Riverside hosts Hardin Northern on Friday for a Northwest Central Conference game.
