Volunteers from the American Red Cross-Northern Miami Valley Ohio Chapter and the Indian Joint Fire District teamed up to install 28 free smoke detectors Saturday.
Crews installed detectors in 22 homes in Russells Point and Washington Township, and another six in the Lakeview area, officials reported.
Volunteers also helped residents develop a fire escape plan, complete a safety checklist, inspected and installed units, replaced batteries and taught residents how to test and maintain their units.
The free smoke detectors were 10-year scaled photo-electric models, new technology promoted by the State Fire Marshal.
Detectors that are 6 to 10 years old need to be replaced, as sensors can become clogged from household dust and malfunction even when batteries have been replaced.
