Please join us for the official unveiling of the new “Welcome to Indian Lake” mural on Thursday, June 9th at 6 pm. The event will take place at the Homegrown Yoga Studio on Main Street in Russells Point.
Indian Lake Middle School Art educator Rebecca Dotson explains that the Logan County Visitors Bureau, LoCo Art and Indian Lake Schools partnered this school year to design and create a mural. With inspiration and guidance from local artist Marilyn Reed, Indian Lake gifted art students recently completed the artwork. Reed put on the finishing touches and it is installed on the side of the building. The work highlights the attractions and history of the Indian Lake region.

Students partner to create mural
Indian Lake Middle School Art educator Rebecca Dotson explains that the Logan County Visitors Bureau, LoCo Art and Indian Lake Schools partnered this school year to design and create a mural. With inspiration and guidance from local artist Marilyn Reed, the Indian Lake students have been working to get the artwork done for the summer season.
Dotson says, “This project was great for students to learn about an art profession and to meet a working artist in our community. It was also a great experience for students to apply what they have learned in art class and math as well as to work with Marilyn.”
The mural was designed by gifted art students, with junior Heidi Hoffman taking the lead. They started back in the fall on the design with discussions about the history of Indian Lake and how it has evolved.
“For inspiration we looked at photos of the Indian Lake area that date back to the 1800’s to current and talked about the history of the lake. As a group we discussed what landmarks are most memorable, as well as activities around the lake,” Dotson explains.
Painting began after Easter. Several middle school students helped out with the painting alongside Hoffman. Even ILMS science teacher Mrs Core has helped with some math and painting.
A team from Dawson Construction installed the mural on the Homegrown Yoga building recently. Reed will put the finishing touches on the project and then there will be an official unveiling with LoCo Art in early June.
