West Liberty-Salem’s boys basketball team used a second-half surge to put away visiting Southeastern and secure a 63-53 Ohio Heritage Conference victory Wednesday.
The Tigers are now 9-2 overall and remain unbeaten in the OHC at 6-0. The win also snaps a 10-game winning streak for the Trojans, who slip to 11-2, 6-1.
“We didn’t do much right in the first quarter,” said WL-Salem head coach Darrin Leichty. “From that point on, the guys responded and did things right from our scouting report. We stepped up and made some big free throws when we were tired. Defensively, we moved as well as we have all season in the last three quarters.”
Southeastern jumped out to a 20-12 lead after the opening quarter. WL-Salem inched its way back in the second quarter with a 9-6 effort, but still trailed 26-21 at the break.
The Tigers’ second-half comeback began with a 15-12 run in the third quarter. That pulled WL-Salem within two points at 38-36.
WL-Salem found an offensive spark in the fourth quarter as it went on a 27-15 scoring burst to lock up the win.
Kannon Stillings powered the Tigers with a game-high 24 points, including 13 points in the fourth quarter. Tyler Louden added 14 points and Austin Miller recorded 10 points.
