West Liberty Salem girls track and field team spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday as a “day on”, not a day off, honoring the civil rights leader’s life and legacy through acts of service. Pictured are, from the left, first row: Ashley Yoder, Megan Adams, Malia Miller and Miley Dooley; and Lily Smith, Claire Longshore, Delaney Jones, Laney Craig, Teagan Boyd, Alaina Irving, Taylor Kennedy and Aubree Timmons. Coach Ann Vogel said members of both middle school and high school teams used the holiday to clean the WL-S weight room and shovel sidewalks and driveways of neighbors and others in need. “No one is above doing the medial work, and cleaning the weight room is no easy task. It was nice to hear the girls share the feeling of accomplishment,” their coach shared of the service projects that also helped to build comraderie among team members. Earlier this year, football players and coaches gathered to sort and load donations for Kentucky tornado victims. Vogel hopes to keep that momentum going with ongoing athletic service challenges.
