West Liberty-Salem’s girls track and field team grabbed an early stranglehold on the Ohio Heritage Conference by winning the league’s preview meet Monday at Mechanicsburg High School.
The Tigers won comfortably with 155.5 points, Fairbanks was runner-up with 119 points, Southeastern was third with 80 points and M’burg was fourth with 55 points. Triad finished 12th with 14.5 points.
The OHC boys preview meet was Tuesday at Mechanicsburg and saw Fairbanks win handily with 147 points. Cedarville took second with 103 points, M’burg was third with 95 points and the Tigers were fourth with 72 points.
WL-Salem’s girls saw wins from Grace Estes in the 100 (13.19), Madison Bahan in the 400 (1:02.02), Ashley Yoder in the 800 (2:32.49), Emily Hollar in the 200 (26.28), the 3,200 relay of Addison McAuley, Yoder, Bahan, and Katelyn Stapleton (9:49.78), the 800 relay of Kaylee LeVan, Lilly Weaver, Estes and Hollar (1:50.60) and the 400 really of LeVan, Lilly Weaver, Estes and Stapleton (51.99).
Placing second were Selena Weaver in the shot put (33-5), Addison McAuley in the 1,600 (5:32.46), Stapleton in the 200 (27.18) and Taylor Kennedy in the 3,200 (12:56.08)
Finishing in third were LeVan in the long jump (15-5), Tina Douthwaite in the pole vault (7-6) and Claire Longshore in the 300 hurdles (51.62) with a fourth-place finish coming form Lena Kauffman in the pole vault (7-0).
Taking fifth were Sophia Hardwick in the 100 hurdles (18.45) and 300 hurdles (53.05), Selena Weaver in the discus (80-6), Mandilyn Weaver in the high jump (4-6), Maria Henderson in the 3,200 (14:38.89) and the 1,600 relay of Kerrigan Burgel, Izzy Wygal, Hannah Bowman and Megan Hollar (4:39.82).
Placing sixth were Mallory Bostick in the 400 (1:06.85), Lilly Weaver in the long jump (14-7).
Leading the WL-Salem boys with runner-up efforts were Garrett Richardson in the 110 hurdles (17.5) and 300 hurdles (45.5) and the 400 relay of Dawson Jenkins, Trevor Berry, Cooper Havens and Jace Wade (46.4).
Placing third was Logan Philips in the 400 (54.5), Tyler Douthwaite in the pole vault (11-0) and the 800 relay of Andrew Kimball, Gabe McGill, Isaiah McGill and Wade (1:38.1).
Taking fourth was Kimball in the 400 (55.8) with fifth-place efforts coming from Phillips in the 110 hurdles (19.07), Joey LaRoche in the 3,200 (11:14) and Berry in the shot put (35-6). WL-Salem competes Friday at the Miami East Invitational.
Chieftain boys win quad meet
Bellefontaine’s boys track and field team won a four-team meet Monday at Urbana, while the Chieftain girls came in second.
The Chieftain boys ran away with the meet after scoring 124.5 points, Urbana was second with 61 points, Northwestern took third with 35 points and Kenton Ridge was fourth with 33.5 points.
“Overall, we had a good meet,” said BHS head coach Ben Davis. “We see a lot of potential in this group. We are a long way off but have time to improve. Our numerous young faces are complementing our seasoned veterans well.”
Kenton Ridge took the girls meet with 83.5 points, BHS finished second with 69.5 points, Urbana was third with 58 points and Northwestern took fourth with 41 points.
Winning events for the Bellefontaine boys were Micah Fogan in the shot put (48-2) and discus (134-11), Ethan Yoder in the pole vault (12-6) and long jump (20-2 1/2), Gavin Wilson in the 1,600 (5:01.2), James Holt in the 300 hurdles (48.2), Connor Skidmore in the 800 (2:10.1) and Tony Stewart in the 3,200 (11:22.3).
Winning relays included the 3,200 relay of Skidmore, Wilson, Patrick Donnelly and Gannon Purcell (9:16.2), the 1,600 relay of Justin Carper, Evan Baker, Marco Martinez and Skidmore (3:56.5) and the 800 relay of Kailyn Organ, Carter Snapp, Harper Scott and Max Varner (1:39.4).
Taking second were Carper in the 800 (2:13.1) and the pole vault (9-6), Micah Woolf in the 110 hurdles (18.3), Stewart in the 1,600 (5:06.7), Max Varner in the 400 (55.4), Jaquan Mundy in the 300 hurdles (48.6) and the 400 relay of Organ, Mundy, Yoder and Scott (47.4).
Placing first for the BHS girls were Montanna Buck in the 1,600 (6:20.7) and 3,200 (14:37.1), Parker Penhorwood in the pole vault (7-6), the 800 relay of Ashlyn Gonterman, Maggie Howard, Penhorwood and Rogan (2:01.3) and the 1,600 relay of Emma Middaugh, Ella Reier, Taylor McCafferty and Rogan (4:59.8).
Runner-up finishes came from Carmen Shumaker in the shot put (30-10) and discus (102-4), Gonterman in the 200 (28.7), Middaugh in the 800 (2:55.2), Azlyn Bechtel in the pole vault (5-0) and the 400 relay of Gonterman, Howard, Penhorwood and Rogan (54.4).
Calvary competes in quad-meet
Calvary Christian’s girls track and field meet took second at a quad meet Monday at Lima Perry, while the Spartans boys finished in third.
Placing first of the Spartan girls were Abigail Reinhard in the 100 hurdles with a new school record time of 19.1 and Madhuri Cook in the 3,200 (16:29.6).
Taking second were Reinhard in the 100 (14.6), Anastacia Rogan in the 200 with a new school record time of 30.9 and the 400 (1:12.6), while Ruby Slemmons was second in the 800 (3:03.8) and 1,600 (6:42.8).
Calvary Christian’s boys saw wins from Isaac Reinhard in the 100 (11.5), the shot put (39-11) and the discus (123-6 1/2) and Caleb King in the long jump (17-11 3/4).
Finishing in second were Clay Howard in the 400 (1:00.7), Ephraim Daniels in the 1,600 (5:35.5) and Reinhard in the long jump (17-3).
