Senior Jacob Thompson kept his undefeated streak alive and captured a sectional title Saturday during the Division III sectional wrestling tournament at Lehman Catholic High School.
The Triad standout won the 170-pound weight class after two days of wrestling and kept his record perfect at 31-0, while teammate Zack Zizzo also qualified by placing fourth at 138 pounds. The top four in each weight class advanced to this weekend’s Division III district tournament at Troy.
Mechanicsburg won the sectional championship with 241.5 points, had nine district qualifiers and five champions. Versailles came in second with 205 points and Covington was third with 171.5 points.
Triad finished 12th with 45 points and West Liberty-Salem was 18th with seven points.
Thompson recorded two pins on Friday and won by a 10-5 decision on Saturday in the semifinals. The championship bout saw Thompson major decision Jonathan Moorman of Versailles 19-6.
Zizzo also reached the semifinals, but was pinned by returning state placer Tanner Smith of Mechanicsburg. Zizzo bounced back with a pin in the consolation semifinals over Andrew Harmon of Miami East in 4:33. He then lost to Tanner Bey of Versailles 8-5 to finish fourth.
WL-Salem’s Tanner Workman was one win short of qualifying to the district meet. He finished fifth at 126 pounds after beating Jacob Bills of Northwestern 8-1 in the finals.
Mechanicsburg qualified Tyler Wetzel (113), Alex Rhine (120), Nick Miller (132), Tanner Smith (138), Wade Smiddy (145), Corey Bogan (152), Kaleb Romero (160), Dustin Knapp (170) and Dylan Hartley (220).
