Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department used a taser on an aggressive dog after it charged at two children and officers around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Two dogs were observed loose in the 400 block of Linden Street and an officer tried to make contact with the dogs. One charged at him and he found safety in his cruiser. He then used the vehicle to force the dogs to their home at 636 Oakland Ave.
Officers were familiar with the owner, Nicholas Barnes, and contacted him. He told them he was heading home from Indian Lake immediately to deal with the dogs.
Meanwhile, two children were walking toward the residence. They followed instructions to stop and turn around. The aggressive dog charged them and they jumped on top a parked car for safety.
Officers tried to draw the dog away and it eventually turned on one of the officers. The officer fired a taser at the charging dog and the probes hit home dropping the dog in its tracks.
Once the taser cycle ended, the dog got up and ran home.
Barnes arrived on scene and the dogs were secured. He was issued two summonses for having a dog at large.
Men lodged on intoxication charges
Robert Dickinson Jr., 42, of 513 W. Columbus Ave., was charged Sunday with public intoxication after he was observed at 1:25 a.m. by a city resident urinating in her yard and barking like a dog.
An officer and a deputy of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find him unconscious in the yard of 128 Plumvally St. possibly from an overdose. He was roused and began acting eratically, slamming a foot on the ground and smacking himself in the head.
He was sweating profusely and was dressed only in pants and socks.
A Bellefontaine squad transported him to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment. Three hours later, he was arrested and lodged in jail.
• Brett Dilucia, 28, of Northwood, was charged Sunday with public intoxication after he picked up an open beer at the Beer Vault, 129 W. Columbus Ave., and consumed the remaining contents after an officer ordered him to put it down.
Dilucia was extremely intoxicated, the officer reports, and unsteady on his feet. He was not willing to call for a sober person and was lodged in jail.
Women report assault
Megan D. Miller of North Lewisburg and Jessica L. Woolf of Bellefontaine told officers they were attacked by two named female suspects outside the Beer Vault, 149 W. Columbus Ave., around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Miller and Woolf told officers they were trying to leave after an argument with the suspects upstairs. The suspects pushed the victims as they descended the stairs and tried to start a fight inside the bar.
Outside, the suspects attacked Miller and Woolf. Both victims were hit multiple times about the head and face.
A Bellefontaine squad was called to the scene and squad personal check Miller for a possible broken nose. She declined to be transported for further treatment.
Motorists face OVI charges
Mindy L. Herring, 36, of 868 E. Sandusky Ave., Apt. 215, was charged Friday with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and issued traffic citations for driving under suspension, no safety belt, driving without headlights on, a stop light violation and a marked lanes violation.
At 11:45 p.m., an officer on patrol observed her driving a southbound car in Central Court without headlights. He followed her eastbound on Chillicothe Avenue to observe her beyond the painted pavement stop bar for a red light a Main Street. Once the light turned green, Herring continued eastbound driving the car across the center double yellow line.
After observing an improper turn from Chillicothe onto northbound Madriver Street, the officer signaled for a traffic stop. Herring did not stop until after making another poor turn onto eastbound Columbus Avenue.
Upon talking with Herring, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath. Field sobriety tests indicated she was impaired by alcohol and she taken the police department offices. There she became ill and vomited.
She did not participate in chemical analysis tests.
• Michael P. Smith, 21, of 645 S. Madriver St., was charged Saturday with OVI and issued traffic citations for speeding and a marked lanes violation.
At 2:35 a.m., an officer observed Smith in a car accelerate quickly from a traffic light at Main Street and Chillicothe Avenue. The office was directly behind Smith and accelerated to catch up and match the speed of Smith’s car. The officer noted he paced the car at 40 mph in a 25-mph zone.
He observed the car travel over the dotted white lane line and the double yellow center line.
The officer attempted to stop Smith after he turned onto eastbound Washington Avenue but he continued on before stopping along Madriver Street near his residence.
There was noticeable odor of alcohol on Smith’s breath as he talked, the officer reported, and the motorist had trouble locating his cellular phone for proof of insurance even though his phone was on his lap the entire time he searched for it.
He was directed out of the car and was observed to be unsteady on his feet. Field sobriety tests indicated he was impaired and he was taken into custody.
His breathalyzer sample was recorded at 0.134.
• Nicholas C. Emerich, 35, of 401 N. West St., was charged Sunday with physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
He was found at 4:45 a.m.unconscious behind the wheel of a sport utility vehicle parked in a municipal parking lot with its engine running.
Officers detected an odor of alcohol on his breath. Emerich would not participate in field sobriety tests.
He was released to his mother.
Motorists cited in injury crashes
Liberty R. Lowe, 18, of Kenton, was issued a traffic citation for failure to control after a single-car crash around 8:45 a.m. Saturday on Main Street near Stockyard Road.
She was transported from the scene by a Bellefontaine squad to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of possible injuries.
Officers report she was southbound and fell asleep. She woke and jerked the wheel to avoid a collision on the right side of the road only to cause the car to spin across the northbound lanes and head-on into a concrete barrier.
Damage was heavy to the car.
• Lylia F. Barger, 75, of Bellefontaine, was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead after a two-car crash at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. She was transported by a Bellefontaine squad to MRH for treatment of possible injuries.
Officers report she was driving a southbound car on Main Street and hit the rear of a car operated by Warren W. Ellis, 34, of Bellefontaine, who had stopped for a red light at Lake Avenue.
Damage was heavy to the Barger car and light to the Ellis car.
