URBANA — An Urbana man has been arrested on charges of second-degree felony aggravated robbery and second-degree misdemeanor resisting arrest relating to an assault and robbery attempt at an Urbana bank Friday afternoon.
Jonathan W. Chalender, 45, is currently lodged in the Tri-County Jail. Police expect to file other charges as well, including felony vandalism and misdemeanor assault.
About 1:30 p.m. Friday, officers of the Urbana Police Department responded to a 911 call at the Civista Bank on Scioto Street related to a disturbance.
While on the way, Sgt. Dave Reese observed a man walking westbound nearby and away from the bank.
Sgt. Reese stopped the man, identified as Chalender, and learned he reportedly was the subject involved in the incident inside the bank.
Officers report preliminary investigation shows Chalender walked into the bank and jumped over the counter, where he allegedly began assaulting a male bank employee.
The victim reportedly was punched and kicked in the head, face and body. While the attack was occurring, other employees moved to find protection and call police, officers said.
Once the bank employee who had been assaulted was able to flee to safety, Chalender reportedly began demanding bank property and equipment. He reportedly threw and smashed electronic devices. Chalender exited the bank and began walking westbound toward, where he was apprehended.
The injured bank employee initially received medical care from the Urbana Fire Division emergency medical services. Later, he went to Mercy Health Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Officers said no additional bank employees were injured during this incident.
