Zachary J. Dickman, 30, of Lima, was charged with breaking and entering after deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary in progress early Wednesday morning.
Deputies said a second suspect remains at large after the incident.
About 4:25 a.m., deputies responded to the report of the burglary at property located at north State Route 235 and Township Road 250. Deputies said they also had previously taken a theft report from this location.
Deputies met with the property owner, who said he observed a suspect exit the building, running west from that location.
Deputies searched the area and eventually located two metal carts with items on them and then spotted a suspect standing in a field about 150 yards away. However, the subject started heading toward a wooded area.
With the assistance of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Washington Township Police Department and Russells Point Police Department, deputies set up a perimeter in the area.
Russells Point Police Department deployed a drone to obtain an aerial view with thermal imaging. LCSO’s K9 Thor also responded to the scene, along with K9 Bruno from the Washington Township Police Department.
Deputies said within minutes, K9 Thor was engaging with a suspect in the wooded area. K9 Thor bit Dickman’s ankle, and then the dog was commanded to release the defendant once Dickman complied with deputies’ commands to put his hands behind his back.
Dickman was found to be in possession of large machete, deputies said.
Indian Lake EMS assessed Dickman’s canine bite injuries at the scene, and then he was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital for further treatment.
The two canines continued searching the area for the second suspect, but deputies said the search eventually was terminated.
Shortly thereafter, deputies received a call in reference to a male subject running northbound along T.R. 250 toward Hardin County in a field. K9 Thor was deployed in that area, but did not find the second suspect.
