Riverside’s girls basketball team used a strong start to help hold on for a 37-31 win over host Urbana on Thursday in non-league action.
The Pirates push their record to 5-1 overall and the Hillclimbers slip to 4-6.
Riverside’s offense got rolling early as the Pirates led 11-1 after the opening quarter. The Pirates outscored the Hillclimbers 13-8 in the second quarter to build a 24-9 halftime advantage.
Urbana was able to slow down the pace in the second half and took the third quarter 9-6, but still trailed 30-18. The Hillclimbers outscored the Pirates 13-7 in the fourth quarter.
Lauryn Sanford paced the Pirates with 12 points, while Kirstin Schlumbohm and Jade Copas each had seven points.
In junior varsity action, Riverside beat Urbana 32-30 in overtime on a last-second basket by Kylie Shoe. Keianna Notestine led the Pirates with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Riverside hosts Bradford on Saturday for a non-league game.
