Internet phone, track resurfacing projects approved
Riverside Schools Board of Education members were updated during their regular rescheduled Wednesday evening meeting about the process of repairing and replacing outdoor athletic structures that were damaged during a storm last month, and also approved a track resurfacing project and an Internet phone initiative.
Jason Bell, maintenance and transportation supervisor, said the evening of March 27, Easter Sunday, thunderstorms that blew through Logan County destroyed the district’s football scoreboard, twisting its steel I-beams. The football bleacher stairs also were thrown by winds during the storm, and the football field and baseball field fencing sustained damage.

Mr. Bell said he recently met with an insurance adjuster, who said based on other damage reports in DeGraff that night, an isolated tornado might have touched down in that area.
The district is now waiting to hear back from the insurance adjuster about the cost and scope of the project. Mr. Bell said the football scoreboard will have to be replaced, while the bleacher stairs and fencing will need to be repaired.
Members also approved an $83,000 track resurfacing project with All American Tracks, which was determined to be the lowest and best bid. Funds will be paid out of the district’s capital project fund.
Track resurfacing will be completed by Aug. 5 and will provide 10 to 13 more years of wear, district officials said.
Relating to the Internet phone initiative, the board approved a four-year VOIP Internet Access Service Contract with the Western Ohio Computer Organization for $23,590 for year one, and $4,280 annually for years two through four, beginning July 1. For the purchase, the district will be able to take advantage of a 30 percent federal eRate funding reimbursement rate.
