Nicholas A. Nevels, 39, of Springfield, was charged Oct. 16 with a felony count of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs after a 1:55 a.m. traffic stop.
An officer of the Bellefontaine Police Department on patrol observed a sport utility vehicle eastbound on Court Avenue approaching Detroit Street. That section of Court is westbound only.
Nevels turned south on Detroit straddling the two lanes before drifting to the left lane. He continued to drift left and nearly hit parked vehicles along Detroit.
At Auburn Avenue, he made an improper turn eastbound and then slammed on his brakes to turn northbound across a lane and into an alley. A traffic stop was initiated after Nevels turned into a drive and nearly struck a utility pole.
Upon contact, the officer noted Nevels’ speech was thick and slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and glossy. He also detected an odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle.
He was unable to provide identification and lied about his name and his Social Security Number, the officer reports.
He was instructed to exit the SUV. He was unsteady on his feet and stumbled as he walked, according to the arrest report.
Attempts to conduct field sobriety tests were futile and Nevels was taken into custody. Inside his wallet was an identification card showing Nevels’ true identity.
Using his true identifying information, the officer learned Nevels had three OVI convictions since 2020. This also opened the door for a warrant to obtain a blood sample when the motorist refused to provide a breathalyzer sample.
He was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital but he was uncooperative. Four officers held him down as a sample was drawn, secured and sent to a crime lab for analysis.
He also was charged with felony identity fraud and two misdemeanor counts of obstructing official business. He was issued traffic citations for driving under habitual alcoholic suspension; non-compliance suspension; a 12-point suspension; OVI suspension; administrative license suspension; driving the wrong way on a one-way street; marked lanes violations; improper turns; and failure to use a turn signal.
Nevels was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
• Kaitlyn J. Roby, 34, of 816 Cooper Ave., was charged Oct. 16 with OVI and issued a traffic citation for speeding.
At 2:35 a.m., an officer was patrolling southbound on south Main Street at 35 mph when Roby drove past at an estimated 45 mph. The officer followed Roby’s sport utility vehicle at a pace of 47 mph.
He followed her to Taco Bell, 1500 S. Main, and initiated a stop. He noticed indicators that Roby had been consuming alcohol. When asked, she initially admitted to having two alcoholic beverages, but later acknowledged she had five drinks.
Field sobriety tests indicated she was under the influence of alcohol and she was taken into custody. Her breathalyzer sample was recorded at 0.191.
She was released to a sober driver.
Scrapper ignores warning note; faces theft charge
Daniel Rogan, 67, of 229 Plumvalley St., was arrested Oct. 14 for theft after he ignored a warning note and stole a kerosene heater and large electric fan from the rear yard of Ryan and Kristen E. Russell’s 117 Lincoln Ave. residence.
Ryan Russell told police it was the fourth incident in which the same red Chevrolet pickup truck towing a trailer had been used to haul off items from the property.
On Oct. 12, Kristen Russell provided officers with door cam video still captures of a female suspect and the pickup in which she was a passenger after discovering $500 in sheet metal missing from the rear yard.
Kristen Russell told officers the woman came to her front door on Oct. 7 around 3:40 p.m. and asked about collecting scrap metal. Kristen Russell told the suspect she intended to use the metal for a chicken coop and the suspect was to leave it be.
Within an hour, Kristen Russell said she saw the pickup truck with a trailer traveling through an alley behind her home.
The sheet metal was taken sometime between Oct. 8 and Oct. 12.
Ryan Russell called police around 8:45 p.m. after video cameras recorded the suspect removing the items from the back yard along with a noted attached to the items stating, “You are on camera.” The Russells had the camera installed in response to the string of thefts.
Officers found the pickup and trailer along with the heater and fan outside Rogan’s residence. He denied involvement in other thefts and claimed the items he took were junk.
He was lodged in jail.
Father charged with domestic violence
James W. Naumann, 41, of 1224 Reservoir Road, was charged Oct. 15 with domestic violence.
Officers were called to Mary Rutan Hospital and met with the defendant’s ex-wife, Crystal Nauman and their son, Liam.
The 14-year-old boy and two women told officers James Nauman grabbed his son by the throat after the teen opened one of his father’s flash memory cards on a computer and showed the images to others in the household.
The women intervened when the father slammed the boy into a wall around 8 p.m. and escorted him to the hospital where his mother works.
Liam had visible injuries to his neck, officers report.
The father was lodged in jail and the case was referred to the Logan County Children’s Services for review.
