Triad’s Zack Zizzo held on for an opening-round win here Thursday at the OHSAA Division III state wrestling tournament and moved one step closer to the podium.

“It’s an awesome feeling to win that first one,” said Zizzo. “I’m really excited right now.”

Zizzo edged Jonas Proffitt of Williamsport Westfall 4-3 in the opening round of the 145-pound weight class inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center. That advanced the senior to the championship quarterfinal round, which begins today at 10 a.m.

The top eight in each weight class at the end of the tournament earn a spot on the podium.

A win by Zizzo this morning would move him to the semifinals and guarantee himself a top-six finish.
