WL-Salem girls tied for 3rd after opening day of district meet

West Liberty-Salem’s girls track and field team got its postseason off to a solid start Tuesday during the first day of action at the Division III district meet at Piqua High School.

The Tiger girls set a school record and advanced to the regional in one event, while the Tiger boys moved on in two events.

The top four placers in each event advanced to the regional meet next week in Troy. The top eight times in each semifinals race moved on to Saturday’s finals. Field events start at 10 a.m. Saturday, with running events beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Covington is leading the girls team race after three events with 20 points. Ft. Loramie is currently second with 17 points, while WL-Salem and Houston are tied for third with 15 points apiece. Riverside is sitting 12th with two points and Triad is 14th with one point.

“It was a solid start for us,” said WL-Salem girls head coach Ann Vogel. “We scored in all three events that were scored. We are definitely shooting for a district title on Saturday. We exceeded expectations and got nearly everyone into the finals. Ft. Loramie will be our biggest competition. We have a lot of work to do and will have to bring our best.”

In the boys team race, Ft. Loramie has a sizable lead after four events with 27 points. Ansonia and Newton are tied for second with 18 points each and Troy Christian is fourth with 12 points. WL-Salem is currently fifth with 11 points.
