Graham looking for another title, Shore bows out of state

COLUMBUS — It has been an exciting two days here at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships and the third day looks to provide even more fireworks.

Team races in all three divisions were tight up until Friday night’s semifinal round. The Division I race is still close and there are numerous individual matchups to watch for tonight.

The state finals begin at 5:45 p.m. inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

Graham is seeking its 19th consecutive individual state championship. The Falcons lead the Division II team race with 93.5 points. Aurora is second with 77.5 points and Canfield is third with 67.5 points.

Bellefontaine is in 20th with 22 points.

The Falcons qualified 11 to the state meet and are placing six of them, including three finalists. Wrestling for state titles tonight are Nick Moore (132), Alek Martin (138) and Jeff Thomas (152). Earning top six finishes are Nolan Gessler (106), Isaiah Stickley (160) and Johnny Shafer (285).

Division III received plenty of attention this weekend thanks to Miami East sophomore Olivia Shore. She is the second female to ever qualify for the state tournament. Shore was the first female to win a championship preliminary match Thursday.

Shore lost in Friday morning’s championship quarterfinals to Milan Edison’s Alec Homan 4-2 and then lost in the second round of consolations to Gates Mills Hawken’s Patrick Reineke 10-7. Shore received a standing ovation for her efforts.
