Shady Bowl Speedway celebrated the Fourth of July holiday with three nights of racing.
The headlining event Friday was the Must See Sprints as they made their annual stop in Logan County.
In qualifying, Dylan Watson set the fast time of 11.949 on his first lap, but had a suspension issue on the second lap that ended his night.
JJ Henes won the 40-lap feature to claim his second career win in the series. Joshua Sexton. Jason Rader, Joey Wyckoff and Charlie Shulz rounded out the top five. Wyckoff and Schulz were heat winners.
The Noble Armor Coating Crown Vics rounded out the night’s action, with DeGraff’s Tyler Brandyberry holding off fast qualifier Zach Beatty-Lakins to take the win his DeGraff Service Center Vic. Alex Zerkle, Tyler Mahaffey and Ken Rosebrook rounded out the top five. Sam Marquis carried the dash win, with the heat win going to Craig Boiling Jr.
On Saturday the Dave Nagel Excavating Late Models headlined the action. Kenny George Jr. jumped out front at the drop of the green for the 35-lap feature. He held the lead through nine laps when Don Mahaffey Jr. sped by. Mahaffey held the field off until defending champion Matthew Parsons motored by on lap 25.
He led one lap before Jim Lewis Jr. took over the lead for one counter, before Parsons regained the lead. Parsons, led the rest of the way in his Ohio State Pallets backed ride to post his second win of the season. Lewis was second, followed by Ryan Fleming, George and Josh Sage.
The Adams Automotive Street Stocks ran a 25-lap crash filled feature that saw two of the top five in points knocked out in a lap four crash. Buck Purtee and Rodney Roush. Chad Small II led the first four laps before Josh Sage of Piqua took over the lead.
Sage powered his Wyant and Silvers to victory for the third time in the 2021 campaign. Jacob Heckman, Terry Purtee, Small II and Nick Frazier were second through fifth.
The Harrod Septic Solutions Compacts ran their 25-lap feature without a yellow flag.
When the dust had settled after 25 laps, Piqua’s Mike Wintrow found yourself in victory lane. Devin Glesner had a great night to finish second, followed by Alec Young, then Pope and Keven Baggett.
The Bullet Liners of Dayton Thunder Cars were next up. Fifteen-year-old Hunter Hicks out ran the entire field as he won his first feature of the season. Corey Wooten led the first nine laps before Hicks put his Miami Salvage Chevy out front for good. Scott Drake was second, with Brad Blue third, Robert Roush fourth and Wooten fifth.
The Midwest Champion Karts finished off the night, with Mike Mason holding off Erik Wolleson for the victory.
The racing action wrapped up Sunday afternoon under a very hot sun. The biggest race of the day was the third segment of third of the Modified Madness Series. Mike Carroll had won the first two events. Jerry Stapleton led the first of 11 of 50 laps before Carroll got by. Carroll looked like win number three was in the bank until with less than 10 laps to go Bellefontaine’s Chris Parker took advantage of Carroll getting up out of the groove and took over the lead. The defending track champion in his Lensman Racing open-wheeler took the checker and the first-place money of $1,500. Carroll held on for second, followed by Stapleton, Gregg Jackson and Buddy Townsend.
Second generation driver Nick Hall of Springfield picked a great time to win his first ever feature when he claimed top spot in the Dirt VRS Pavement Harrod Septic Solutions Compacts. Hall dominated the later stages of the race to take the win over Josh Sage, Alec Young, Devin Glessner and Nick Barrett.
Corey Wooten also picked up his first feature win when he captured first place in his Wooten Wood Crafts Chevy. He led all 20 laps to beat Scott Drake, Hunter Hicks, Robert Roush and Brandon Helton to the checker.
Jimmy McElfresh was the victor of the Noble Armor Coating Crown Vic feature. Zach Beatty-Lakins was second, chased across the line by Sam Marquis, Alex Zerkle and Greg Wilcoxon.
The 150-lap King of Enduro’s was won by Scottie Marquis after he battled with Nick Barrett. Marquis proved he was king on this night. Bobby Terry, Nick Dolan and Dale Pebbles filled out the top five spots.
Racing returns to Shady Bowl on Saturday with the Blackford Memorial, a 55-lap feature paying $1,555 for the Dave Nagel Excavating Late Models. The Adams Automotive Street Stocks, the Harrod Septic Solutions Compacts and Noble Armor Coating Powder Puff Crown Vic’s. Racing will start at 7 p.m.
