Zayne C. Hakes, 21, of DeGraff, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and possession of marijuana related to a traffic stop Friday evening.
Officers of the Russells Point Police Department on patrol about 9:30 p.m. observed his southbound vehicle speeding southbound on State Route 708 near Aiken Street in the village, traveling 45 mph in a 35 mph zone.
As officers were catching up to the vehicle, it drove left of center several times, then drove completely into the opposite lane of travel near Indian Lake Fish and Game.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and the driver, Hakes, showed signs of impairment. He admitted to drinking five beers and stated he was texting while driving.
Hakes failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. He admitted to having marijuana inside the vehicle. Officers found an open container of beer spilled on the driver’s side floorboard. Vomit was observed on the outside of both the driver’s side and passenger side of the vehicle.
The vehicle was towed to the Russells Point Police Department’s impound lot. Hakes was transported to the Russells Point Police Department, where he provided a urine sample, with test results pending. He admitted he would also have marijuana and Xanax in his system.
He also was cited for a marked lanes violation and open container in a motor vehicle, and was released to a sober driver.
The Washington Township Police Department officers assisted at the scene.
