Host Riverside jumped out with seven runs in the first inning and went on to fight off West Liberty-Salem for a 13-9 victory in a non-league softball game Thursday. The Pirates improve to 11-11 on the season. WL-S drops to 13-11.
After Riverside took its early 7-0 lead, the Tigers battled back with three runs in the second inning and three in the fourth to make it 7-6. Riverside put three runs on the scoreboard in the fifth to lead 10-6.
WL-Salem got back to within a run with three runs in the top of the sixth, which made the score 10-9.
However, the Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the seventh to wrap up the win. Riverside’s offense piled up 16 hits.
Jenna Woods went 4-4 with a home run and four RBI to spark the Pirates. Amerra Huston went 3-5 with four RBI and Malina Kreglow added two hits and two RBI.
Woods and Alaina Snow combined for 10 strikeouts in the pitching circle for Riverside.

Triad tops Fairbanks
Triad’s softball team picked up a 9-6 win over host Fairbanks in Ohio Heritage Conference action Thursday.
The Cardinals are now 8-14 overall and 6-8 in the OHC. Fairbanks falls to 8-11, 7-8.
Triad led 1-0 after four innings. The Cardinals blew the game open with seven runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-0 lead.
Fairbanks scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth to make the score 8-3. The Cardinals added another run for a 9-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
Fairbanks pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cardinals were able to hang on for the win.
Hailey Snider went 4-4 with a double to pace the Triad offense. Kaydence Feasel and Holly Alvoid each had two hits and Abby Walls added a double.
