Riverside’s boys basketball team used a gutsy fourth-quarter effort to rally past Houston 58-55 on Saturday for a non-league victory. The win improves the Pirates to 5-13 on the season.
“We came out a little sluggish, but we were able to stay close for a majority of the game,” said RHS head coach Seth Bodenmiller. “I thought we would come out with more energy in the third quarter, but were just settling for shots on offense and playing bad defensively.
“In the fourth quarter, I was very happy with our effort on both ends of the floor. We were making them work on defense and getting to the free throw line. We also had some big stops down the stretch to seal it.”
Houston held a 15-14 lead to end the first quarter and outscored Riverside 14-12 in the second quarter. That left the Wildcats holding a 29-26 halftime advantage.
The third quarter saw Houston maintain its lead at 41-35. Riverside came storming back in the fourth quarter with a 23-14 run to take over the lead and get the win.
Kaden Burk powered the Pirates with a double-double, scoring 23 points with 11 rebounds. John Zumberger had 17 points and Wade Auflick added 11 points.
In junior varsity action, Riverside outlasted Houston 61-56 in overtime. Landon Stewart led the Pirates with 21 points. Riverside hosts Upper Scioto Valley on Friday.
