At 12:05 a.m., an officer of the Bellefontaine Police Department on patrol observed a pickup truck turn from Columbus Avenue south onto Detroit Street. The motorist failed to maintain travel in one lane and drove through parking spaces on the east side of the street.
The officer followed and observed the motorist fail to signal while turning eastward on Auburn Avenue and then failing to stop for signal at Main Street.
Once southbound on Main, McKirahan accelerated to 45 mph in a 25-mph zone.
A traffic stop was initiated and the officer noted an odor of alcohol while talking with the motorist. He reportedly stumbled exiting his pickup.
