Indian Lake senior Steven Major and Benjamin Logan sophomore Cole Houser highlighted Division II district wrestling action Friday at Wilmington by reaching the semifinals.
The top four placers in each weight class advance to the Division II state tournament next weekend in Columbus. Wrestling at Wilmington resumes at 10:30 a.m. today.
A win in today’s semifinals for Houser and Major would qualify them for the state meet. A loss would drop them into the consolation semifinals, where they would need a win to qualify. They have already guaranteed themselves a top-six finish and a spot on the podium.
Major (220) started with a pin over Alter’s Sam Homan in 1:53 during the first round and then pinned Unioto’s Nick Robinette in 58 seconds in the quarterfinals. He will face Logan Elm’s Garrett Mitchell in today’s semifinal round.
Houser (106) handled Kaleb Ream of Springfield Shawnee by a 17-4 major decision in the first round and then beat Logan Iams of Ross 13-6 in the quarterfinals. Houser faces Graham freshman standout Jordan Crace in today’s semifinals.
“Cole wrestles extremely smart,” said Ben Logan head coach Kyle Seeley. “He is ready to take that next step now.”
The Lakers had a strong first day by winning five of their seven first-round matches and have six of their wrestlers still in the tournament.
“We had a good start to the tournament, but we need to continue to wrestle tough and press the action in our matches,” said IL head coach Ryan Dickson. “We want to get some more wins (today), so we need to continue to wrestle smart.
“Steven wrestled aggressive and is where he should be. He needs to take care of his business and he’ll get to where he wants to be.”
