Bellefontaine Fire Department conducted its annual prescribed fire operations Sunday at the Myeerah Nature Preserve, 7405 State Route 540, near Zanesfield.
A total of approximately 35 acres in three units was treated with beneficial fire to encourage a diversity of wildlife and pollinator habitat.
The units burned are managed for native tallgrass prairie and oak savanna ecosystems.
Five Bellefontaine firefighters formed the fire crew, with help from Natural Resources Manager Chad Carroll of the Hancock County Parks District. Carroll is pursuing his Ohio Certified Prescribed Fire Manager credential and must participate in several burns before attending the certification course.
Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District staff assisted with keeping preserve visitors safe during the burn.
