Benjamin Logan Elementary fourth-graders in Mr. Smith and Mrs. Hayes’ classes recently celebrated Pi Day by using the famous transcendental constant to help them get the best deal at local pizzerias. Students learned to use pi and the formula for the area of a circle. The fourth-graders calculated the cost per square inch on different size pizzas from various Logan County pizza shops. The students looked up menus online and calculated the area of each pizza using pi (pi times radius squared) and then divided the price of the pizza by the area to find a cost per square inch. They found that the smaller pies generally had a higher unit cost. The curious students also measured the circumference and diameter of cat food cans and petri dishes to approximate pi (circumference/diameter = pi) and came close (3.13 and 3.15 for example). “The grade level even has a few memorizers that will attempt to dislodge the national fourth-grade champion later this week at 7,000 some digits or Benjamin Logan’s top memorizers at 120 digits,” Mr. Smith said.
