The Riverside Pirates got off to a slow start Friday in their home opener, falling behind by double-digits early to visiting Northeastern before rallying for a thrilling, 23-22 victory to grab their first win of the season.
Riverside improves to 1-1 on the season. Northeastern falls to 1-1.
Myles Platfoot intercepted an overthrown deep pass from Jets quarterback Diezel Taylor with just over three minutes left to play in the fourth quarter to seal the comeback victory for Riverside.
The Pirates trailed 10-0 after one quarter on Friday, but scored 17 in the second quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Raiders show off new digs, but can’t slow Tigers
West Liberty-Salem dampened the christening Friday of Benjamin Logan’s new playing surface, speeding up and down the field turf en route to a 42-7 victory in a non-league game.
The Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season with the victory. Ben Logan falls to 0-2.
The Raiders hung with the visiting Tigers Friday through the first two quarters, but WL-Salem scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to runaway with the easy victory.
Chiefs’ rally falls short in Coldwater
A second-half surge was not enough for Bellefontaine’s football team to overcome a rough first half here Friday night.
The Chiefs fell behind Coldwater 21-7 halftime before rallying in the second half to close within three points with two minutes left in the game.
But Bellefontaine could get no closer in a 28-25 loss.
Bellefontaine is now 1-1 on the season. The Cavaliers improve to 2-0.
“Credit to our kids for fighting until the end,” said Bellefontaine head coach Jason Brown. “They refused to give up on the brotherhood.
“We just didn’t play well enough to win, and that’s on me. We started off pretty well, but they got the momentum and once they got the momentum, we lost our composure.
That’s when we lost the game.”
Lakers declaw Panthers for first win
Indian Lake grabbed an early Friday, and closed with a decisive fourth quarter en route to its first victory of the season, a 22-6 win at home against Fairbanks in a non-league contest.
Indian Lake improves to 1-1. Fairbanks drops to 0-2.
Gophers run all over Lima Perry for first win
The Ridgemont Gophers lit up the scoreboard Friday in their Northwest Central Conference opener and cruised to 62-28 victory over Lima Perry.
Ridgemont improves to 1-1 (1-0) on the season, and Perry falls to 0-2 (0-1.)
The Gophers did most of their damage on the ground Friday, rushing for a total of 517 yards as a trio Ridgemont running backs eclipsed 100 yards.
