Riverside’s softball team picked up a big league win by shutting out defending Northwest Central Conference champion Hardin Northern 7-0 on Monday.
It was also the 100th career coaching victory for head coach Andy Phelps.
The Pirates boost their record to 8-1 overall and remain unbeaten in the NWCC at 3-0. The Polar Bears fall to 5-3 on the season and are 4-1 in the league.
“Northern won the league last year, so to beat them on their field is a great feeling,” said Phelps. “We now control our own destiny in the league race.”
Riverside jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and scored one more run in the second inning for a 4-0 score. The Pirates added another run in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth inning to build a 7-0 cushion.
Lauryn Davis earned the win in the pitching circle for Riverside. She scattered four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
“Lauryn Davis pitched a great game tonight,” said Phelps. “This is the best Lauryn has pitched this year.”
Offensively for the Pirates, Lauren Anderson had a home run with one RBI, Aubrie Stillings went 2-4 with a double and one RBI, Lauryn Davis had a double with two RBI and Marissa Davis had two RBI.
