Tariq F. Sopher, 20, of 732 Harding St., was arrested Saturday after he became combative with officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department outside the Beer Vault, 149 W. Columbus Ave.
An officer was on the way to another incident around 11:35 p.m. when he drove by the business and spotted Sopher shirtless and laid out on the sidewalk and partially in the street.
Witnesses told the officer the suspect had been challenging multiple people to fight outside the bar and in a parking lot across Detroit Street to the west. He also had attempted to enter the bar but was removed by staff members.
Sopher had fresh scraps on his chest and shoulders, the officer observed as he made contact. Sopher also had mud on his stomach, chest and arms.
He refused to identify himself, the officer reports while noting the suspect was clearly intoxicated and reeked of alcohol.
Another officer arrived on scene to help take Sopher into custody, but the suspect tried to pull away and was taken to the ground. Once handcuffed, officers began to walk him to a cruiser. Sopher continued to attempt to pull away as officers forcibly placed him in the rear seat.
He used his feet to block the rear door and was warned several times before officers used a Taser on him. More officers arrived on scene as Sopher was removed from the cruiser after continually struggling with officers.
They continued to struggle with the suspect for several minutes, attracting the attention of passing motorists and patrons of the bar.
More officers arrived on scene to help hobble the suspect.
He was secured in the rear seat of a cruiser and transported to the Logan County Jail.
There, he continued his belligerence with jail staff and was placed in a restraint chair.
He was lodged on charges of obstructing official business, criminal trespass, public intoxication, persistent disorderly conduct, underage consumption of alcohol, resisting arrest and failure to identify himself to law enforcement.
• Shelby R. Rector, 25, of 163 Miami Ave., was charged Sunday with public intoxication after officers responded to a 1:45 a.m. complaint.
A neighbor told dispatchers he heard thumping noises from Rector’s residence and a small child screaming.
Logan Barnes, also of 163 Miami Ave., told officers there was an argument between Rector and himself which awakened the child. Rector was found outside on the northeast side of the complex heavily intoxicated.
She was lodged in jail.
