Walter S. Koontz, 87, of Lakeview, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 26, 2017, at his home.
Walter was born Feb. 3, 1930, in San Bernardino, Calif., a son of the late Hiram and Permelia Houston Koontz. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Cebula and Louise Kantfhenkel.
Walter is survived by four daughters, Janet Koontz and Marsha Koontz, both of Lakeview; Leslie (Don) Mansfield of Uhrichsville and Ronda (Joe) Sneary of Roundhead; 10 grandchildren, Katrina, Rickie, Amanda, Shawn, Shannon, Anthony, Crystal, Curtis, Peggan and Jennifer; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Hiram “Junior” Koontz of Tulsa, Okla.
Walter was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Korea and Japan with the 24th Infantry Division, 21st Regiment, Company C, during the Korean War. He retired from Duff’s Quarry to return to Arkansas where he grew up, then returned to Ohio to be near his daughters and their families. Walter was a fan of western movies and actors John Wayne and George Gabby Hayes, whom he once met. He also was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and OSU Buckeyes.
Funeral services begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St., Lakeview, where calling is from 2 to 4 p.m., prior to the service. Military honors will be provided by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his name to Universal Home Health and Hospice Care, 701 S. Main St., Bellefontaine, OH 43311; and the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
