Jeane D. Carnes, 92, of Newberry, died Friday evening, Feb. 13, 2015, at the Newberry Assisted Living Center in Newberry, Mich.

Born on Sept. 8, 1922, in Pickford, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Albert and Martha Hancock Hughes.

She married James B. Carnes in Toledo on Jan. 11, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1991. Also preceding her in death were one brother, eight sisters and a grandson, Kristopher Hussey.

Survivors include her daughter, Martha (Phil) Kerns of Wolverine, Mich.; sons, James (Martha) of Hollansburg and Steven (Lynn) of North Oaks, Minn.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jeane graduated from Pickford High School in 1939 and furthered her education at Michigan Teachers College (EMU) and then Butterworth Teaching Hospital, where she graduated with a registered nursing license. Her first employment was at Little Traverse Hospital. She later served as director of nursing and acting interim administrator at Mary Rutan Hospital.

Jeane was active in her church, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society and volunteered with her husband to deliver Meals on Wheels. She also was active in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System.


According to her wishes, cremation services have already occurred. A Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. March 10 at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, Russells Point, with Rites of Christian Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.
